Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiological and pathological processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules called adipokines. The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, C1q/TNFα-related proteins (CTRPs 1–7), are highly conserved adipokines. Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed only in differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in a wide range of tissues and are believed to act mainly on liver and muscle to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism. Structural studies of adiponectin suggest an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, indicating a common ancestral innate immunity gene. CTRP5 has been implicated in age-related macular degeneration.
