Target Information
Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine family. It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and angiogenic factor. IL-8 expression is induced by various inflammatory stimuli in many cell types, including macrophages and endothelial cells, where it is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies. Originally isolated from osteosarcoma cells, IL-8 contains an ELR motif (Glu-Leu-Arg) and signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors. It has been known by other names such as NAP-1, GCP-1, MONAP, and protein 3-10C. The IL-8 gene is part of a chemokine cluster on chromosome 4q. IL-8 is implicated in tumor angiogenesis and growth, as well as in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis caused by viral infections.
