Target Information
Autophagy is a cellular degradation process where cytoplasmic components, including organelles, are sequestered within double-membrane vesicles (autophagosomes) that fuse with lysosomes or vacuoles for content degradation.
LC3 (microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3) is a mammalian homologue of Atg8 and plays a key role in autophagosome formation. LC3-I is cytosolic, while LC3-II is membrane-bound and enriched in autophagic vacuoles.
The conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II serves as a sensitive marker for monitoring autophagy in mammalian cells.
