Target Information

The spike (S) glycoprotein of coronaviruses contains protrusions that bind to specific host cell receptors, essential for host specificity and viral infectivity. The term peplomer refers to a group of heterologous proteins on the virus surface that function together.

The coronavirus spike (S) glycoprotein mediates virus entry and cell fusion, and serves as a major immunogen and target for entry inhibitors. The S protein comprises two subunits:

• S1 subunit: Contains the receptor-binding domain that interacts with angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2)
• S2 subunit: Mediates fusion between viral and host cell membranes

The S protein plays a critical role in inducing neutralizing antibody and T-cell responses, contributing to protective immunity during infection.
