Target Information
Noggin is involved in numerous developmental processes such as neural tube fusion and joint formation. Morphogenesis of organs is initiated by downgrowth from epithelial stem cells through signals from WNT3A (to stabilize beta-catenin) and Noggin, a bone morphogenetic protein inhibitor. Mutations in Noggin have been identified in families with proximal symphalangism (SYM1) and multiple synostoses syndrome (SYNS1), both characterized by multiple joint fusion.
