Target Information
This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter) and encodes an insulin-regulated glucose transporter protein. In the absence of insulin, this membrane protein resides within muscle and adipose cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface and facilitates glucose uptake. Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
