Target Information
The ABL1 proto-oncogene encodes a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein tyrosine kinase involved in cell differentiation, division, adhesion, and stress response. c-Abl activity is negatively regulated by its SH3 domain, and deletion of this domain can transform c-Abl into an oncogene.
In chronic myelogenous leukemia and some acute lymphoblastic leukemias, the c-Abl gene undergoes a (9;22) chromosomal translocation, forming the Philadelphia chromosome, which fuses c-Abl sequences from chromosome 9 with the Bcr gene on chromosome 22.
c-Abl also plays a role in DNA repair by activating pro-apoptotic pathways when DNA damage is irreparable.
