Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 participates in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential. CD44 is found in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, generating diverse isoforms with distinct functions. Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
