Target Information
Tight junctions are one mode of cell-to-cell adhesion in epithelial or endothelial cell sheets, forming continuous seals around cells and serving as a physical barrier to prevent solutes and water from passing freely through the paracellular space. These junctions consist of continuous networking strands with complementary grooves.
The CLDN6 gene encodes a component of tight junction strands and belongs to the claudin family. This integral membrane protein acts as one of the entry cofactors for hepatitis C virus. Gene methylation may be associated with esophageal tumorigenesis. The CLDN6 gene is located adjacent to CLDN9 on chromosome 16.
