Target Information
Humans with lipodystrophy show loss of body fat, fatty liver, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance. Mice with mutations in the fatty liver dystrophy gene exhibit similar phenotypes. The mouse gene responsible for fatty liver dystrophy, Lpin1, encodes a nuclear protein called lipin. Lpin1 mRNA is highly expressed in adipose tissue and induced during preadipocyte differentiation, indicating its role in adipose tissue development and its relevance as a candidate gene for human lipodystrophy.
Database searches identified mouse and human sequences similar to Lpin1, including two related mouse genes and three human homologs.
