Target Information
This gene belongs to the solute carrier family 2 (facilitated glucose transporter family) and encodes an insulin-regulated glucose transporter protein. In the absence of insulin, this protein is sequestered within muscle and adipose cells. Upon insulin stimulation, it translocates to the cell surface to transport glucose. Mutations in this gene are associated with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM).
