COL9A1은 type IX collagen의 세 개 α사슬 중 하나로, hyaline cartilage의 소량(5–20%)을 구성합니다. Type IX collagen은 주로 type II collagen과 함께 존재하며, knockout 마우스 연구에서 α1 사슬 합성이 type IX collagen 분자의 조립에 필수적임이 밝혀졌습니다. COL9A1 결핍은 조기 발병 골관절염과 연관되어 있으며, COL9A1 유전자 변이는 인간의 골관절염, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia 6, Stickler syndrome 등과 관련이 있습니다. Stickler syndrome은 안과, 구강안면, 관절, 청각 이상을 특징으로 하는 질환입니다.
