Target Information
This gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers regulating various cellular responses to extracellular stimuli such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDEs control cellular cyclic nucleotide levels and play a key role in signal transduction. The PDE4B protein specifically hydrolyzes cAMP, and altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
