Gephyrin은 억제성 신경전달수용체를 시냅스 후 세포골격에 고정하는 신경세포 조립 단백질로, 수용체 서브유닛 도메인 및 튜불린 이합체와의 높은 친화성 결합을 통해 작용합니다. 비신경 조직에서는 몰리브덴 보조인자 생합성에도 필수적입니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 신경학적 질환인 hyperplexia 및 몰리브덴 보조인자 결핍과 관련될 수 있습니다. 다양한 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이체가 보고되었으나, 모든 전장 전사체의 구조는 아직 완전히 규명되지 않았습니다.
