Target Information

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP) are small (approximately 13–14 kDa) intracellular proteins with a high degree of tissue specificity. FABPs bind long-chain fatty acids and play an important role in intracellular fatty acid utilization. There are at least six distinct types of FABP, each showing a specific tissue expression pattern. Due to their small size, FABPs can leak from damaged or dying cells, leading to increased serum levels. Liver FABP is a sensitive marker for liver cell damage both in vitro and in vivo. Chemically damaged tissues often show reduced FABP presence, aiding in histological identification. L-FABP is also used as a marker for rapid hepatocyte lysis in toxicology assays and for monitoring liver damage during and after transplantation.
