Target Information
CD1E encodes a member of the CD1 family of transmembrane glycoproteins, structurally related to MHC proteins, and forms heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. CD1 proteins mediate the presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens of self or microbial origin to T cells. The human genome contains five CD1 family genes on chromosome 1. CD1 family members differ in cellular localization and specificity for lipid ligands. The CD1E protein localizes within Golgi compartments, endosomes, and lysosomes, and is cleaved into a stable soluble form required for intracellular processing of glycolipids for presentation by other CD1 family members.
