Target Information
This gene belongs to the type IV, cyclic AMP (cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family. Cyclic nucleotides act as second messengers that mediate various cellular responses to extracellular signals such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. PDEs regulate intracellular cyclic nucleotide concentrations and play key roles in signal transduction. The PDE4B1 protein specifically hydrolyzes cAMP, and altered activity has been linked to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. Multiple splice variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
