Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that is a subunit of one of the complexes forming the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The NDUFS7 protein is one of over 40 subunits found in complex I (NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase), which transfers electrons from NADH to the respiratory chain. Ubiquinone acts as the immediate electron acceptor. Mutations in this gene are associated with Leigh syndrome due to mitochondrial complex I deficiency, a severe neurological disorder characterized by bilaterally symmetrical necrotic lesions in subcortical brain regions.
