Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to a promoter element referred to as an X box. This gene product is a bZIP protein that also acts as a cellular transcription factor binding to an enhancer in the promoter of the T cell leukemia virus type 1. It may enhance viral protein expression by partnering with a viral transactivator.
Under ER stress, the XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by IRE1, removing 26 nucleotides and producing the active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced isoform XBP1(U) functions as a negative feedback regulator of XBP1(S), modulating transcription during recovery from ER stress. A pseudogene of XBP1 is localized to chromosome 5.
