S100 단백질은 다양한 세포의 세포질 및 핵에 존재하며, 세포 주기 진행 및 분화 등 여러 세포 과정 조절에 관여합니다.
S100 유전자는 염색체 1q21에 클러스터 형태로 존재하며, 최소 13개의 멤버를 포함합니다.
이 단백질은 종양 억제 기능을 가질 수 있으며, 유전자 재배열 및 발현 변화가 유방암과 관련되어 있음이 보고되었습니다.
