Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the STAT family of transcription factors. In response to cytokines and growth factors, STAT family members are phosphorylated by receptor-associated kinases, forming homo- or heterodimers that translocate to the nucleus to act as transcription activators.
STAT5 is activated by various ligands, including IL-2, IL-3, IL-7, GM-CSF, erythropoietin, thrombopoietin, and growth hormones. Its activation in myeloma and lymphoma with TEL/JAK2 fusion is independent of cell stimulus and essential for tumorigenesis. The mouse homolog induces BCL2L1/BCL-X(L) expression, suggesting an anti-apoptotic role.
