Target Information

Inward rectifying potassium channel activated by phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, likely involved in controlling the resting membrane potential in electrically excitable cells. Plays a role in establishing action potential waveform and excitability in neuronal and muscle tissues.
These channels preferentially allow potassium influx rather than efflux. Their voltage dependence is regulated by extracellular potassium concentration, shifting channel opening to more positive voltages as external potassium increases. Inward rectification is mainly due to blockage of outward current by internal magnesium.
