Target Information
SOX genes comprise a family of genes related to the mammalian sex determining gene SRY. These genes contain sequences encoding the HMG-box domain, responsible for sequence-specific DNA-binding activity.
SOX genes encode transcriptional regulators involved in cell fate decisions during development and control of diverse developmental processes.
Approximately 30 SOX genes have been identified, conserved during evolution, and play key roles in animal development. Some are implicated in human diseases, including sex reversal.
