Ribosomes are organelles responsible for catalyzing protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include four RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The RPL18 gene encodes a member of the L18E family of ribosomal proteins, a component of the 60S subunit. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are distributed throughout the genome, and alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed.
