Target Information
More than 99% of the vertebrate ocular lens is comprised of terminally differentiated lens fiber cells. Two lens-specific intermediate filament-like proteins, CP49 (phakinin) and filensin (product of the BFSP1 gene), are expressed only after fiber cell differentiation begins. Both proteins form a unique cytoskeletal structure called the beaded filament (BF).
Mutations in BFSP1 cause autosomal recessive cortical juvenile-onset cataract. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist for this gene.
