Cytokeratin 8은 type II keratin 계열에 속하며, 염색체 12번 장완에 위치합니다. Type I 및 type II keratin은 상피세포의 세포질 내에서 중간 필라멘트를 형성하기 위해 이합체를 형성합니다. Cytokeratin 8은 일반적으로 keratin 18과 이합체를 이루어 단층 상피세포의 구조적 안정성을 유지하며, 신호전달 및 세포 분화에도 관여합니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 cryptogenic cirrhosis를 유발할 수 있습니다.
