Target Information

Connexin 43 (Cx43) is a member of the gap junction protein family. Connexins form hexamers that create hemichannels, enabling intercellular communication. These channels assemble into gap junctions, crucial for development and cell growth regulation.
Phosphorylation of Cx43, particularly at Ser368 by PKC, modulates gap junction communication. Src kinase can also interact with and phosphorylate Cx43.
Connexin 43 is the major gap junction protein in the heart, essential for synchronized contraction and embryonic development. It is regulated by multiple kinases affecting myocardial coupling.
A related pseudogene, GJA1P, is mapped to chromosome 5. Mutations in GFAP are associated with X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, oculodentodigital dysplasia, and heart malformations.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants of GFAP have been identified.
