Target Information

F4/80 antigen is a 160 kDa cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the EGF TM7 family. It shares 68% overall amino acid identity with human EMR1 (EGF module containing mucin-like hormone receptor 1).
Expression is heterogeneous and varies during macrophage maturation and activation. F4/80 is expressed on mature tissue macrophages including Kupffer cells, Langerhans cells, microglia, and macrophages in multiple tissues such as gut lamina propria, peritoneal cavity, lung, thymus, and spleen red pulp.
It is also found on some dendritic cells but absent from macrophages in T cell areas of spleen and lymph nodes.
Although its ligands and functions are not fully identified, studies suggest a role in generating efferent CD8⁺ regulatory T cells.
