Target Information

The ING4 gene belongs to the Inhibitor of Growth (ING) family of tumor suppressors. All five members of the ING protein family contain a conserved plant homeodomain (PHD) finger motif at the C-terminal end, commonly found in transcription factors that modulate chromatin structure.

ING proteins form transcriptional complexes that activate responsive genes involved in:

  • Growth arrest
  • DNA repair
  • Gene transcription
  • Apoptosis
  • Senescence

The candidate tumor suppressor ING4 plays a role in brain tumor pathogenesis and regulates tumor growth and angiogenesis. Its expression is reduced in gliomas compared to normal brain tissue and correlates with tumor grade progression. ING4 interacts with the p65 (RelA) subunit of NF-κB and represses transcription of NF-κB responsive genes. Inactivating mutations and deletions of the ING4 locus have been observed in various human cancer cell lines and breast tumors.
