이 유전자는 두 개의 동일한 단백질로 구성된 효소를 암호화하며, 해당 효소는 해당과정(glycolysis) 및 포도당신생합성(gluconeogenesis)에서 glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate와 dihydroxyacetone phosphate의 이성화 반응을 촉매합니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 triosephosphate isomerase 결핍증과 관련이 있으며, 염색체 1, 4, 6, 7에 위유전자(pseudogene)가 존재합니다.
대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변이가 생성됩니다.
