Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily J member 2 (OR2J2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception.
Olfactory receptors are part of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating G protein-based odorant signal transduction.
The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is specific to each organism.
