Background
This gene encodes a sodium-independent transporter mediating cellular uptake of organic ions in the liver. Its substrates include bile acids, bromosulphophthalein, and certain steroidal compounds. The protein belongs to the SLC21A solute carrier family. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. (RefSeq, Dec 2008)
