- Isoform A: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein; Cytoplasmic side. Anchored to ER membrane through two transmembrane domains. Localizes throughout ER tubular network and co-localizes with TMEM33 at ER sheets.
- Isoform B: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein; Cell membrane; Extracellular side; Cell junction. Mainly located on ER tubules and sheet edges. Upon ICAM1 engagement, redistributed toward endothelial junctions interacting with CDH5.
- Isoform C: Endoplasmic reticulum membrane; Multi-pass membrane protein.
Background
This gene belongs to the reticulon family associated with the endoplasmic reticulum. Reticulons are involved in neuroendocrine secretion and membrane trafficking in neuroendocrine cells. The Nogo A protein acts as a potent neurite outgrowth inhibitor and may contribute to blocking CNS regeneration in higher vertebrates. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
