Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with complex nomenclature and multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Pseudogenes corresponding to this gene are also present.
