Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are essential for protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may functionally interact with death-associated protein 3 (DAP3).
