Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins that comprise the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, often differing in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is found on chromosome 4. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. (Provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016)
