Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are responsible for protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ greatly among species, hindering recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the L3P ribosomal protein family, and a pseudogene is located on chromosome 13q. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
