Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a 28S small subunit and a 39S large subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes also lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition challenging. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, though some may undergo nonsense-mediated decay (NMD). [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
