Background
This gene encodes a highly conserved nonhistone protein, a member of the heterochromatin protein family. The protein is enriched in heterochromatin and associated with centromeres. It contains an N-terminal chromodomain that binds to histone proteins via methylated lysine residues, and a C-terminal chromo shadow-domain (CSD) responsible for homodimerization and interactions with chromatin-associated nonhistone proteins. The encoded product participates in functional kinetochore formation through interactions with essential kinetochore proteins. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 3, and multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
