Target Information
SAGA (Spt-Ada-Gcn5 histone acetyltransferase complex) is a histone acetylase complex with Gcn5p as the catalytic subunit. It functions in transcription regulation, overlapping with the fundamental transcription factor TFIID, which has Taf1p as its catalytic subunit.
SAGA and TFIID have distinct roles in transcription of housekeeping and stress-responsive genes. The SAGA complex consists of Ada proteins (5 types), TBP-related proteins (4 types), TAF proteins (5 types also found in TFIID), and other protein groups (>6 types).
Its molecular functions include histone modification, recruitment of transcription regulators via DNA interaction, and control of transcription initiation by TBP.
Gcn5p, showing histone acetylase activity, is one of the Ada proteins and in budding yeast consists of 439 amino acids.
