Target Information

Mutations in the ABCA1 gene (ATP-binding cassette transporter 1) are associated with Tangier disease (TD), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by absence of plasma HDL, cholesterol ester accumulation in the reticuloendothelial system, and altered lipid trafficking.
ABCA1 mediates the apoA-I–dependent export of cholesterol and phospholipids from cells. It is localized to the plasma membrane and Golgi complex, and its expression is regulated by cholesterol flux. The balance of cholesterol transfer between HDL and macrophages involves competition between ABCA1 and SR-BI.
