Target Information
Aquaporins are membrane channels involved in water transport, designated AQP0 through AQP10. They are widely distributed in mammalian tissues, with multiple isoforms often coexisting in the same cell.
While most aquaporins are selective for water, AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, and one AQP10 transcript also transport urea and glycerol.
AQP2 is uniquely activated by vasopressin to regulate water reabsorption in kidney collecting ducts.
Aquaporins contribute to renal water absorption, pulmonary secretion, lacrimation, and cerebrospinal fluid regulation.
In the lung, AQP5 mediates water transport across the apical membrane of type I alveolar epithelial cells.
