Target Information
Cytokine that plays a crucial role in innate immunity of the epithelium, including defense against intestinal bacterial pathogens, in an autocrine manner. It stimulates the production of antibacterial peptides and proinflammatory molecules through NF-kappa-B and MAPK signaling pathways. Acts synergistically with IL22, TNF, and IL1B to induce expression of antibacterial peptides such as S100A8, S100A9, REG3A, REG3G, and DEFB2. Depending on the context, IL17C may have both protective and pathogenic roles by maintaining epithelial homeostasis or promoting inflammation. Enhanced IL17C/IL17RE signaling may increase susceptibility to autoimmune diseases.
