Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that defends against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes the dismutation of the superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) into hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted into water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

There are several SOD isoforms:

• SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme, 32 kDa homodimer containing Cu and Zn ions.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme, 80 kDa tetramer containing Mn, located in the mitochondrial matrix near the respiratory chain.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular form, heparin-binding multimer, primarily expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for SOD, delivers Cu to SOD1 and activates it through direct cofactor insertion.
