Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting involvement in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin plays a role in regulating short- and long-term synaptic plasticity and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene can result in mental retardation (X-linked 96).
