Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.
- Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA molecules.
- Pol II transcribes protein-coding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs that affect RNA processing.
- Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA genes and all tRNA genes.
Each polymerase consists of 9–15 different polypeptides, with RPB6 and RPB8 subunits shared by all three RNA polymerases.
