Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptor proteins are part of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
