Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila gene mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans gene Sma. SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
SMAD1 mediates the signals of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which regulate cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses. Upon BMP ligand binding, SMAD1 is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinases. The phosphorylated SMAD1 forms a complex with SMAD4 to regulate transcription.
SMAD1 is targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases such as SMURF1 and SMURF2, leading to ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
