Target Information
This gene encodes human lysozyme, an enzyme that cleaves the β(1-4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan. Lysozyme is a key antimicrobial component found in human milk, spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears.
Missense mutations in the LYZ gene have been associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
