Target Information
DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. They are involved in numerous cellular processes requiring alteration of RNA secondary structure, including translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Based on their expression patterns, some members of this family are associated with embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division.
The DDX17 gene encodes a DEAD box protein that functions as an ATPase activated by various RNA species but not by double-stranded DNA. The proteins encoded by DDX17 and DDX5 are closely related compared to other DEAD box family members. Multiple isoforms may be produced due to alternative splicing and the use of alternative translation initiation codons, including a non-AUG (CUG) start codon.
